Beautiful giallo.

Very strongly designed film with sometimes beautiful images and a nice score by Ennio Morricone. The amount of gore & sleaze is also good. Fortunately, all this more than compensates for the very lousy story (even for a giallo). Many characters are barely introduced and function purely as cattle for slaughter. Only the main character stands out, although the connection between him and the murderer has been dragged out. Well acted by Franco Nero.

The film therefore mainly relies on the audiovisual. Lots of beautiful sets (especially the futuristic 70s bungalow), strong lighting (the tunnel scene!) and an overall exciting atmosphere. Despite the story-related shortcomings, I am lenient here: 3.5*.

In terms of atmosphere, locations and the beautiful cinematography of Vittorio Storaro, this is a beautiful giallo thriller that has a number of exciting moments. But the story, just like the protagonist (Franco Nero as reporter), is almost indecipherable. A lot of characters pass by where not much attention is actually paid. It therefore becomes a tangle of suspects, motives and connections between the various characters. Franco Nero plays his role well and there are strikingly beautiful ladies such as Pamela Tiffin, Agostina Belli and Silvia Monti. The latter really has a special beautiful look. The kills are rather mediocre in this thriller. On the other hand, it is daring when the killer wants to kill a child. The unraveling of the motif and the final scene that follows makes little impression and is poorly developed in a single combat. Atmospheric soundtrack by Ennio Morricone. 7/10

Plot-wise, I found this difficult to follow with various characters who are introduced very briefly with a special lens during the intro and who look alike. Afterwards I had to read the plot again. Fortunately, the broad outlines were clear during the film and it is therefore a mystery that can only be unraveled gradually.

I especially think the visuals are a big plus. There is a great influence of classic noir on this film with the play of light and shadow. And that combines Luigi Bazzoni and his DoP with contemporary innovative camera work and beautiful photography. And the decoration of sets is also very stylish. This features a superb soundtrack by maestro Ennio Morricone. So if you already have difficulty with the story, the visual and auditory are more than nice compensation. And Franco Nero stars in the leading role as an alcoholic journalist.

The denouement is one à la Agatha Christie, which is also typical within the giallo genre.
