Mediocre film in which a writer and teacher is poisoned and only has one day to find out who and why. An excellent fact for a thriller, but the plot is unbelievable and this also applies to the characters (partly because of this it never becomes exciting). The film has a brisk pace and plenty happens.

A literature teacher and ex-writer is poisoned and must solve his own murder in the time he has left to live. I appreciated the film noir cinematography, although this remake of Rudolph Maté's film is not always good. But the whodunnit lasts a long time and you don't quickly realize how the ends hang together. For me it could have been a bit grimmer and darker. Now it's all too much of an 80s formula: the student who gets involved, the humorous moments, the music. By the way, the ending would have been better if Quaid had been allowed to die after he had told his story in the commissariat. Anyway, the white light at the end indicates that he won't make it. . Not entirely successful, because with simple adjustments this could be made into a stronger film, but certainly not unsatisfactory.

PS: Cool poster here . Quaid in Jesus position against a clock.

In the 1940s there was a film noir with the same title and premise, but beyond that the comparisons end. This modern update is a pleasure to watch. It starts and ends in b&w and with an expressionist camera as a reference to the film's roots. In between we see a flamboyantly colorful event. Good storyline and good actors with Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. It is a hybrid of noir, action and comedy. Such a preview of what Tarantino was his trademark, but without the winks. Visually very beautifully directed and photographed. A really good viewing piece.
