Like many, I belong to the film buffs who say/think they don't like musicals, but if I think about it like this, there are actually quite a lot that I appreciate (Dancer in the dark first, but also [ i]My fair lady[/i], Les umbrellaies de Cherbourg, Moulin Rouge! and even The sound of music). West side story is one of the very best in the genre, especially thanks to the great sets and the compelling music. Although the vocals themselves and the acting are not left, the instrumental and choreography is simply rammed and the camera work and use of color are also nice. All things considered, musicals pay more attention to strong stylization in line with content than the average Hollywood production, which perhaps explains my sneaky appreciation for this genre. Irresistible movie.

This modernized version of 'Romeo & Juliet' is one of the most overrated musicals of all time. Wood provides Maria with a dose of spice and the energetic contributions of Rita Moreno and the acrobatic Russ Tamblyn are pluses, as is the way the choreography expresses the personality of the characters. But Beymer is colorless like Tony and the songs are often superfluous and annoying. "America" and "Gee, Officer Krupke" are fine, but the endless "Maria, Maria MarIIII-AAAA" is considerably less good for me. And given the wafer-thin story, it all takes way too long.
