Cabaret plot

"Life is a Cabaret."

Seeking shelter in early 1930s Berlin at the time of the rise of the Nazis, writer Christopher Isherwood finds refuge with Sally Bowles, an energetic and impulsive singer at Cabaret nightclub. The two are completely absorbed in the hedonism of the nightlife in the German capital and increasingly shut themselves off from the reality of the outside world.

Remarkable, substantive musical (with the rise of Nazism in Berlin in the late 1930s) with beautiful songs ("Maybe this Time", "Money makes the World go round" and especially "Come to the Cabaret") and an unparalleled Liza Minnelli . I can still hear Jo Röpke say in his program "Première" when the film was presented: "Look at this incredibly extraordinary natural talent ".

A musical to enjoy, not silly like many, but a believable story.

Mediocre mix.

The first time I saw Minnelli in a movie. It's easy to see how people can hate her because she's very present, but in this Cabarat it suited the role she took on. Then I found York more disturbing. Kind of boring guy.

The cabaret pieces are by far the best thing about this film. Gray does a great job, the songs are comical, creepy and nasty at the same time. This also fits in quite well with what happens in the story (and around it).

The relationship between the three was less exciting, especially in the second hour when things suddenly have to be a bit more dramatic. The rise of the Nazis in the background is also more of an annoying distraction than it really adds anything. The second hour starts to drag on quite nicely, although 120 minutes is just too long for a film like this I think.

Linn already remarked (besides me on the couch) that a remake of Luhrman would do this film well, I completely agree. Fosse does his best to portray it gracefully and bombastic, but it sometimes looks a bit too cheap. Lots of good intentions, but with a Moulin Rouge in mind, this could be much better.

Musical part is quite nice, the storyline seriously does the film short.

1.5*

I like musicals, but movies like this (and then I think of Moulin Rouge) are TOO bombastic. Take me to a fairytale world, to fantasy with a bit of drama, to an epic story, … But not a surreal world for me. Which makes me understand why this musical will just appeal to others. Moulin Rouge is also a popular movie for many.

The figures in the Cabaret mean nothing to me, Liza Minelli is not that bad but can be quite busy. And Michael York isn't exactly a captivating figure. The film is rather dated and if something could be improved, this is one of the few musicals that would be worth a remake. By the way, I miss the contrast with the Nazis in the background. It stays a little too much in the background to really matter.
