Sarah Millick flees to Vienna with her lover, the music teacher Carl, to get out of an arranged marriage. They get married there and try to build a life, but it turns out that it is not so easy to survive as a starting musician. They get the financial help of a local baron, who, however, has not entirely honest intentions.
