All That Jazz plot

"All that work. All that glitter. All that pain. All that love. All that crazy rhythm. All that jazz."

Joe Gideon is a successful director and choreographer. Joe is an obsessed workaholic, working almost day and night. He expects top performance from all who work with him. He neglects his wife and daughter. Joe is nearly exhausted both physically and emotionally, but every morning in front of the mirror, he picks himself up again with the words 'it's showtime'. He keeps going by taking pills, cigarettes, alcohol and cheating and ignores the first signs of angina pectoris (heart cramp). As a director, Joe is editing his new film and, at the same time, as a choreographer and director, he is also busy preparing a new major Broadway musical. When Joe suffers a heart attack, he sees his whole life go by in flashbacks.

Not really successful.

Films that want to present the show world as something magical/unreal are actually rarely interesting. When the director also puts himself center stage, you quickly get the feeling that it is all a bit thick and inflated. But it is mainly the film itself that elevates itself.

The drab, gray 70s are actually a terrible period for musicals, which rely more on color and exuberance. There is absolutely no such match here. Now the film is not a full-blown musical, because Fosse also turns it into a kind of existential film, with some surreal touches here and there. But that also only works moderately.

The songs are not exactly catchy, the routines not really interesting either. Furthermore, Gideon is not a very fascinating figure to build a film around. The film is otherwise energetic and has a brisk pace, so that the two hours still pass fairly smoothly, but the final balance is rather negative.

1.5*

Decent musical, but not really my favorite genre. Fortunately, it is not a pure musical par excellence, although the show quality and music do of course get a prominent place in the film. In itself an interesting plot in which Joe Gideon, as a workaholic, tries to make himself indispensable day and day. It was only a matter of time that this would be revenged.

Beautiful images and editing at moments such as the audition at the beginning of the film. It was a good start to start the film. Scheider plays his role well, just like his character with drive and intensity. So he came across as quite believable. Despite his hectic lifestyle, attacks on his body and harshness as a director, he also shows his more vulnerable side during the relationship with his daughter.

Film that is not always interesting, drags on a bit halfway through, but overall quite okay to see. Not bad.

On the Film Times Facebook page that I like, this All that Jazz is mentioned in the list 'Movies You Should Watch at Least Once During your Lifetime'. Enough for me to watch it immediately, without knowing anything else about it.

I actually had in mind that this was a Robert Altman film (perhaps confused with Nashville from 1975), and didn't know it was a musical either. Not exactly my favorite genre, and perhaps the reason why I'm stuck at 3.5. The songs and dances sometimes go on a little too long and are a little too numerous for me personally. But otherwise a very handsome print with a wonderful atmosphere and an excellent Scheider. Great universe that Fosse has created here.
