There's Something in the Barn plot

"Traditions die hard!"

A typical American family inherits a farm in the Norwegian mountains. There they cross paths with a tricky creature from Nordic folklore: the Barn Elf. The family must avoid the wrath of this leprechaun Santa Claus by avoiding all the bright lights and loud noises and leaving a bowl of porridge behind on Christmas Eve.

A funny and amusing comedy horror film.

Which takes place at Christmas.

The first part starts off very nice, but as the film continues it becomes less so.

When the head gnome elf gathers his friends with a small army of elves.

Then it becomes too exaggerated.

They should have stuck with that one gnome elf that the movie started with.

But the film is certainly entertaining.

Norwegian director Magnus Martens does himself a disservice by running away with these kinds of nonsensical concepts in such an authentic setting. Not only is the film an almost literal copy of Gremlins, but it is also clear that Martens' interpretation does not have much to say in terms of direction. . The build-up is particularly long for the relatively meaningless content and the acting of the family is substandard. Martin Starr in particular walks around lost in the horror spectacle and Kiran Shah is the only character (without a single dialogue) with a certain flair. There's Something in the Barn benefits from an atmospheric setting and slightly comic second half, but ultimately it is little more than a slightly more graphic Christmas variation on the mediocre teen horror film. The lack of really notable kills as well as tension building doesn't leave a film like this in the memory for very long.

There's Something in the Barn

Pretty violent Christmas movie. Horror/comedy wouldn't have been out of place as genres either.

It takes a while until the film really starts, or at least for the Elves to take revenge on the family. From then on it becomes more fun, but I had the feeling that the film still held back too much and that there was more to be gained from it.

The film reminded me of Gremlins, but with murderous Elves, but I liked this one a bit less. The atmosphere was good and it was filmed in Norway, so that provided beautiful images of the landscape. The Elves also looked good.

Nice to have seen it once.

3 stars.
