Not really a high-quality film that also looks quite poor and lacks tension. The Hammer atmosphere and the music make up for something, but not enough to call it a successful Mummy film adaptation. The 1932 version is preferable to this one. Peter Cushing it does work well though.

This Hammer adaptation of the classic Universal film seems to be based more on The Mumm's Hand (1940) and The Mummy's Tomb (1942) in terms of story.

Personally, I have never found mummies on film to be that terrifying and that turned out not to be the case this time either. In stories you can imagine what a mummy would look like and I always found that much more terrifying. Because I don't think the mummy in this film is really scary or dangerous.

Peter Cushing was allowed to take the lead again in this Hammer film, with Christopher Lee appearing as an Egyptian priest. I believe that this Hammer has not stood the test of time as well as, for example, Fisher's other works. The film has a bit of an old-fashioned atmosphere and that unfortunately does not improve the tension.

I recommend first watching Fisher's Dracula or Frankenstein films and leaving them alone.

The settings of the flashbacks from Egypt look good even though you have the impression that they are just recordings in a studio. Very colorful and detailed. Fortunately, Christopher Lee gets some screening in terms of appearance during those flashbacks because for the most part he walks around like a mummy.

Due to his height, Lee provides an imposing dark appearance. Peter Cushing is also back as the son of the archaeologist who has disturbed the peace of the dead and therefore carries a curse that has consequences for the family. Yvonne Furneaux as Cushing's wife is a beautiful appearance and could have had a little more share in the story. Especially fairly superficial effect in her double role as princess. More adventure than horror in my eyes, but certainly not boring. 6/10
