Bad and distracting acting, awful special effects, awful photography, sets and costumes that were pulled from a dusty closet somewhere, and a story that once also sat on the pile of rejected scripts. But above all, within five minutes, my attention was gone. I was done watching, but eventually, I kept my eyes on other things. 0.5*.

A pretty good SF film with a well-constructed story, though it lacks originality. The performances of the mutated alien (always that evil laugh) and Ava are also very mediocre. Fortunately, Slater also plays along to save the day. I can't help but feel that with a better cast, a much better film could have been made with this good and believable script. The open ending opens the possibility of a sequel.

Not so good.

The film does indeed draw inspiration from elsewhere. There's a fair amount of Alien in it, but ultimately, this is mostly The Thing, but on the moon. Only, Christian doesn't quite know what to do with it.

You see him go through all the plot points, but it's all presented with a rather soulless quality. After half an hour, the material is practically exhausted, and he has to muddle through for another 40 minutes before he can begin the finale, because, of course, the 90-minute time limit has to be met.

It's just that the alien effects are still reasonably good. The costumes, location, and actors are often the lowest tier. There are also a few very strange plot points. Why they ultimately need Ava and release her is completely unclear to me, the quarantine is a complete farce, and Bruce's logbook is, of course, ridiculous.

Christian attempted to make a run-of-the-mill genre film, but failed in the execution. It's a shame, because this material could easily be reworked, but you'd need a decent director to do so. This film clearly lacks that, and the rest falls flat.

Only for the true sci-fi completists; everyone else can skip this. You won't miss anything.

1.5*
