My cup of tea. The link with Saw is nice, but movies are just amusing in their own right. See this one separately from the series and if it has to be part of it, it's less than the previous Saw's, but still very entertaining.

Not that bad in itself. Seems like some people have a somewhat selective memory when it comes to the Saw series. From part four the level went down quickly and from part five it was downright sad. The fact that this film approaches things slightly differently and has a slightly different atmosphere seems only positive to me, but apparently some still prefer to see exactly the same Saw clichés after no less than eight parts..

Didn't think Chris Rock did it that wrong at all. Not a world achievement, but in any case loads more charisma than most of the dull protagonists known in the series. There were mainly a few bit parts that could have been better, Jackson's role is rather rushed and Minghella as surprise villain is a very predictable choice.

Especially beautifully portrayed. Editing is sometimes wonderfully furious, cool lighting and although the traps are a bit disappointing in terms of creativity, it is all grubby enough. The scene with the glass but also the final scene were certainly there in that regard. And that soundtrack just remains epic.

The theme of the corruption within the police is not very big, but it does give the film a little more of its own face than some of the other parts. You don't have to watch it further for the story itself, of course, but at least we're glad we're rid of the overarching Saw 1 to 8 plot. It had become such an overcomplicated mess. It's nice that they can just start here with a 'clean slate'.

So it's good popcorn entertainment, although it might help to see the film a bit more loosely from the Saw series. Spacious 3*
