Strange that no one has seen this.

Same old, same old? Well, in a way. Although K. Kurosawa chooses more for a typical Japanese drama elaboration here. The most striking difference with his other work is the visual finesse, which is often lacking in Kurosawa's films. Here are quite a few beautiful shots, much peace and beautiful use of color. But still quite natural, which immediately makes the link to the Japanese drama.

There is a great calmness of the film, very leisurely pace and few real scares. The film is not scary but frequently exciting. Kurosawa does not always cut well unfortunately, which means that some scenes do not end wonderfully, but generally there is a nice suspense in it.

The ending isn't great, but it does hold the rest of the film together. The atmosphere is still there, but the narrative chaos that always seems to crop up at the end of Kurosawa's films is also here.

There's a bit of an odd atmosphere in this film, as it's surprisingly visually refined for a Japanese horror, and there's a lot of emphasis on peace and serenity.

I certainly enjoyed it, but he should learn to end his films better. Less is more in this case, although it doesn't apply to horror (or let's drop horror and just keep it to suspense).

4*

Creative jack-of-all-trades Kurosawa made a J-horror light here at a time when Asian horror was a hype.

But don't expect Ringu or The Grudge. He keeps to the arthouse level. But the film on the other hand is certainly not bad.

A female writer with writer's block exchanges the big city for a house in the countryside, hoping to get some more inspiration. She finds out that this place is notorious for a mummified woman who has been brought up again. From that moment on, fiction and reality get mixed up. She falls under the spell of a supervisor, but she does have new material to write about. From that moment on, it becomes a bit of a who, how and why thriller. The atmosphere, however, remains very good. Oppressive, quiet, exciting but not very scary. Mainly the moments in which the woman gets visions and certainly those dream sequences make this film interesting. And for the J-horror lover: interesting are also those scenes in which the ghost of the woman occasionally appears in the background.

Nice video that I've actually had my eye on for a long time. With the year you've had more and more success with video sites and you have to swallow the advertising that comes in every ten minutes.

3.5*
