Flanagan's Ouija.

After the 2014 movie it's pretty normal to see this as a sequel (or prequel), but practically this is just a Flanagan project around a Ouija board. In terms of style, approach and storyline, the films have nothing in common.

In any case special to attract a director like Flanagan for a sequel to a half-flopped first attempt. Or should we believe the Blumhouse promos and are those guys really committed to the horror genre? It really does start to look like that. In any case, nice to see a sequel with a solid quality injection, instead of the typical cash-in setup.

The Ouija thing is a subset of the haunted house film, in that respect you should not expect too much originality. Hands on the triangle, a first attempt where someone is screwing things up and then the real work of the mind. If you expect an original angle, it is better to choose another film.

Flanagan has to rely more on the effect anyway and he is getting better at it. Strong build-up, a few creepy scenes and a good ending. Acting is way above the norm, the jump scares work and the CG is put to good use. The lover of this work will not be disappointed.

But still glad that Flanagan now also likes to work with Netflix, because watching these kinds of films in the cinema has become almost impossible. Or they should find a way to not only test KNT by age. Too many giggling chicks who have to make themselves known for an entire movie trying to keep it dry. How hard is it just to shut up. No, rather just watch at home on day 1 of release.

But otherwise a nice little horror, Flanagan does not disappoint and is also someone who regularly comes up with a new (horror) film. Besides Bousman, I don't know many of that kind anymore.

3.5*

It all started pretty well. Pretty predictable story, of course, but tension was built up well. But then... the last half hour was really bad. The special fx very weak and the acting unbelievable. The script is laughable.

We watched the movie shaking our heads... my neck still hurts.

Not recommended.

setback.

After I was really overwhelmed by the Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House, I started watching more works by the creator, Mike Flanagan. I had already seen Oculus and I certainly liked it and later I also liked Doctor Sleep.

Then this movie. I haven't read anything about it or watched a trailer so I could step in with an open mindset. The beginning of the movie is very nice. What always appeals to me about Flanagan's work is that they are not so much pure horror films. They are often drama films about people with problems. The supernatural or horror element is more of a tool to get to the bottom of the deeper layers of these characters.

This film also starts off well and takes time to get to know the characters. Gradually, some unexplained things happen. Now I don't find Flanagan's entire repertoire scary, but here the tension is built up calmly. The film is also very nice until just over half way through. From there it throws away everything that was built up before and goes on a cheap haunted house/slasher tour. This detracts a lot from the film. Had it not been for the beginning of the film, I would have given it an even lower rating.

You can see Flanagan's talent on certain points here, but unfortunately it does not succeed in delivering the final product completely well. Hence a narrow fail.
