This (for now) last part of the made. Elements from the previous parts return and, as in the previous parts, this also applies on a meta level within the part itself, in which the horror film in which our heroine will play reflects the larger story. Yet it is not boring because 'more of the same' because the setting is different every time and this time we are in the 80s: after Maxine has escaped the Texas Porno Star Massacre in the predecessor made as a porn star where she is given the opportunity to make the transition from porn to horror, which can be an important step towards real star status, but she is chased by her past in the form of a criminal detective while a satanic serial killer makes the city unsafe and conservative Christians protest the 'satanic' film and music industries. In the denouement all the threads come together. I don't think this part has a clear message like the two previous films - or it must be that in the US people want the best for themselves, which produces opposite results for a Christian and a hedonist - but this part is also very entertaining.

In 1985, 33-year-old Maxine [Mia Goth] exchanges her career as a fake porn actress for a career as a Hollywood Scream Queen with a leading role in The Puritan II, directed by the cynical and demanding Elizabeth Bender [Elizabeth Debicki]. She is being stalked by someone reminiscent of Herr Flick and/or Dr. Claw, is harassed by an arrogant private investigator [Kevin Bacon] and must deal with two detectives [Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale] who think Maxine can help them in their manhunt for 'The Night Stalker', a serial killer who has haunted Hollywood. has been under control for quite some time. As usual, West immerses you in his version of the era with an integral version of ZZ Top's “Gimme All Your Lovin'”, the porn scene, cocaine and pseudo-religious groups that rebel against the pernicious influence of film, television and rock music . For enthusiasts, there are references to all kinds of horror classics. Unfortunately, the screenplay is a repository of half-developed ideas that in some cases have little to do with what passes for the central plot. West treats you to gore every now and then, but forgets about the tension building and Maxine is a repulsive character that is difficult to sympathize with. I was more concerned about Bacon, the only one who brings some life into the brewery. The denouement is truly a horror, possibly the result of a completely failed attempt to parody the pulp horror films of the time. Last of three horror films (after X and Pearl) that Ti West made with Mia Goth in the leading role.

I completely missed the previous films in this trilogy, and although I thought it would be useful to see those first, I still went to see MaXXXine. You have to do something on a warm summer evening, and to sit on a terrace with all those cheerful people.

With the disclaimer that I obviously don't know what the film would have been like if I had seen the earlier parts, I didn't feel like I was missing anything. In some ways it is even a nice way of looking at things. Anything you don't immediately understand may be because you didn't see the previous films, so you won't notice any shortcomings in this part.

By the way, I really need to go to the toilet. Just type quickly. I thought this was a very entertaining movie. It wasn't all that complex, I didn't really care what happened, who the murderer was and what his motivations were. And that made it a relaxing viewing experience. Mind at zero, enjoy the fast dialogues and the crazy characters.

The influence of makers such as Tarantino and the Coentjes is evident. Although I can appreciate a certain individuality, it hardly bothered me. Perhaps their film language has now been imitated so often that it no longer feels like stealing, but more like a movement. Inside it was a pleasant little thing. I might even watch those first two parts. Go figure.
