Gore turned out.

With director Yuzna at the helm, the infamous series actually got a fourth part. Although this smells more like a rejected and dust-gathering film that, with a few Christmas trees in the background, was still released as part of the money-generating series. It certainly didn't do the series any harm, because the previous films pale in comparison to this one. It doesn't get any stronger anywhere and they hardly get more predictable than this, it is certainly gross.

Reasonable.

It carries the Silent Night, Deadly Night label, there is a short fragment on TV from one of the previous films and the film is set around Christmas, but that is about it, the similarities with the previous parts are over. Neith Hunter plays the main character Kim, a woman who wants to make it as a reporter and she wants to investigate a case about a woman who spontaneously burst into flames.

She gets permission from her boss Eli (Reggie Bannister from the Phantasm films) to investigate further and she discovers that the ignition had to do with some kind of witch cult led by Fima ("Bond girl" Maud Adams). She sees Kim as a new addition to her cult.

Partly because of this last, strange things happen to Kim where the line between reality and illusion blurs. This makes for a number of strange scenes in which a few cool special effects can be seen. Neith Hunter is not a great actress, but the addition of nice supporting roles, such as that bad bum and "Jo the Butcher" keeps the film watchable.

Furthermore, the film is not exactly a slasher, but there are still some deaths here and there. The effects are a cool addition to the film and Richard Band's soundtrack sounds very recognizable. The sounds produced by synths/keyboard are reminiscent of the Puppet Master films, but also provide some extra atmosphere in this film.

Yuzna brings with this film again a special viewing experience, but I certainly did not find it bad. Good enough for 2.5*.

Director Brian Yuzna has experience with practical effects and these are sometimes used effectively in this fourth part of the Christmas horror series. However, the content has nothing to do with the previous parts and even the holiday itself is more of a side issue, where a half-baked story with occult traditions and strange scenes is put in its place. A lack of interesting characters and effective atmosphere do the film in, but towards the final phase Yuzna fortunately comes up with funny effects and a fairly unpredictable progression. This fourth part also gives the impression that the current title was stuck on it by accident, because this has very little to do with a sequel. However, it is considerably better to sit through than the extremely boring third chapter.
