Thoroughly amused with this movie which I have now seen for the second time, the first time almost 20 years ago. The first time it was more impressive than I can remember, but that has to do with what is possible in 2021 in the field of special effects etc. The story is a bit improbable: playing two superpowers against each other caused by one madman. Good thing there's a Jack Ryan....

For the rest: a great cast, a few nice action scenes, good opening music and the whole has an appropriate playing time.

I thought this was a bit of a bland, tame thriller that never really ignites and with Affleck in the lead role also has someone who can't carry the film and makes it rather blue. It's not all bad in itself, but the film just couldn't touch me, nowhere to convince me. Only that part around the blast is pretty well done. But the story and characters aren't all that great. A week later I don't really remember what I was looking at and have largely forgotten about this thing. That says enough. 2.5*

Mediocre.

Thirteen-in-a-dozen political thriller, albeit that it is not really exciting for a moment. It's simply too standard for that, even if the inevitable America-Russia gets a little detour. Ben Affleck must have been an interesting casting in 2002, commercially. I think it's just a piece of cake and if you put him in combo with Morgan Freeman in yet another mentor role you know it. Typically such a weekday film, which leaves almost no lasting impression. The more often mentioned blast shakes things up a bit, though. Good thing, too.
