Speak No Evil plot

During a holiday in Tuscany, an average Danish family befriends a Dutch family. Months later, the Danish couple receives an unexpected invitation to visit the Dutch in their wooden house and decides to go. However, it doesn't take long for things to get out of hand, as the Dutch couple turns out to be very different from what they appeared to be. The Danish family finds themselves in a predicament in a house of people they were completely mistaken about and wish they had never entered…

Crazy actually. The film is full of plot holes (see elsewhere in these comments) and is regularly completely unbelievable, and yet I found it a fascinating one.

First, I thought it was really scary. I can smile at people chopping each other up, but my stomach can barely handle the tension that precedes those kinds of gory scenes. I see through the trick, but at the same time it makes me completely sick. In that respect, this film reminded me of Funny Games, but also a bit of I know what you did last summer. I have never seen more scary movies in my life.

The inconvenience and the way in which the Dutch family slowly but surely gained power over the Danish, I found very strong. The best scene for that matter is when they just went back to pick up that stupid bunny. The Danes explain what bothers them, a fairly plausible story, and the Dutchman refute all those things and manage to maneuver himself into the victim role. A strong example of gaslighting.

I also liked the ending, although to, . That they undress without protest, knowing what to expect, totally broken. And then die in each other's arms while declaring love to each other. Intense.

A horror movie couldn't be more realistic. that's why it's not a horror movie. It is real.

We do not stand up against injustice and violence, we dare to express our values and standards with a hoarse, squeaking voice with great fear, but at the moment supreme we crawl under the covers in fear.

As long as nothing happens to us and ours. as long as we don't get cold feet. As long as Haarlem doesn't become Mariupol. I saw Psycho, with the shower scene, I saw Rosemary's baby, and I saw the answer to the question, "why?"

There is no why. It exists because we allow it, allow it, and don't resist

How I hate cowards (in movies). Also in Nocturnal Animals I was extremely annoyed by that character of Jake Gyllenhaal. That Danish couple will not do anything against that devil couple at any time. They just let themselves be led to the slaughter while that duo is not even armed. They have their daughter maimed and kidnapped and literally stone themselves. It made me really uncomfortable. Also typically European to put forward such an emasculated man as protagonist. Furthermore, quite a bit of tension is built up and at a certain moment it is really merciless. Well acted, especially by the Dutch. Original touch to a classic theme.

This movie disturbed to such a degree that I found it pretty difficult to finish. It descends from an unnerving atmosphere into an all-out horrific finale that left me sitting in my chair for quite some time afterwards.

Whilst some elements are rather unbelievable, it is the standard of the acting which keeps it real and means when the crazy ending arrives, you're not entirely ready for it.
