Atlantide plot

Daniele is a young man from Sant'Erasmo, an island on the edge of the Venetian Lagoon. He lives by reason, isolated even from his peers engaged in an existence of self-indulgence expressed in the cult of the barchino (motorboat). This obsession centers on building increasingly powerful engines to transform the lagoon's small sloops into dangerously fast racing boats. Daniele, too, dreams of a record-breaking barchino, one that will take him to the top of the standings. But everything he does to further his dream and win the respect of the others, tragically turns out to be counterproductive.

Mixed feelings for me. The first half hour is brilliant cinema and at times it comes back later, but much less frequently. That first half hour, however, is a wonderful sketch of a summer where young people laze around and mainly sail on motorboats in the Venetian lagoons. Beautiful images (of a falling night or boats drenched in neon), a fine techno soundtrack and a strong tempo. Really a piece to get lost in. But above all, the film says a lot. Even if nothing happens, this kind of cinema shows real life, perfectly (re)experiences the summer feeling of young people and the film therefore has more content than any exaggerated drama film.

From the moment there is a plot, the film simply becomes much less strong. Although minimal, the plot is too much and above all not interesting at all. The movie focuses on one person, the petty criminal Daniele, but I didn't find his whole person fascinating at all. When it comes to him just floating around, then the movie is good. When it comes to plot, the film collapses. And the overall atmosphere of that first half hour just disappears. And the movie never really gets over that. Still rounded up. 3.5*

The film gives a glimpse into the bored life of young people on an island of Venice where they race around on souped-up speedboats instead of souped-up mopeds, while otherwise they mainly seem to smoke weed and the film is just as annoying. The film is clearly focused on style rather than substance – the meager plot is deliberately told obscurely, probably to prevent the style from being pushed into the background – but I don't find the style particularly special (playing with color filters and so on) or otherwise impressive. It is therefore little more than a very boring film.
