John Forbes appears to have achieved "The American Dream": He has a good job at an insurance company, a beautiful home, a loving wife and a son. But when he comes into contact with the sexy Mona Stevens through work, whose assets may have been financed by her boyfriend's fraudulent practices, he falls head over heels for this femme fatale. It is not Lizabeth Scott in the role of a possible femme fatale who is the instigator of evil in this film, but Raymond Burr - who later became unforgettable with the series "Ironside" as a wheelchair-bound detective - , in the role of a private detective in love.

Although with Dick Powell I always think he will "Young And Healthy" sing, he has done his best with his to break the brave image of the 1930s. In this textbook example of a film noir, he plays an insurance agent who is tired of his bourgeois existence (house, wife, child) and therefore seems easy prey for femme fatale Mona Stevens [Lizabeth Scott] and shadowy detective JB MacDonald [Raymond Burr. ]. Add to that the jealous (criminal) boyfriend [Byron Barr] and the tight direction of Andre De Toth and you have a great film noir. Jane Wyatt holds her own as the devoted wife.

Solid film noir with icons Lizabeth Scott and Dick Powell. And Raymond Burr is really impressive. Like many forties noirs, it is mainly a lot of chatter, although at the end even heavier caliber is involved. The use of locations is nice for creating an atmosphere, as is the expected play of light and shadow. The plot is well worked out with a love triangle evolving into a four-corner relationship (which of course then turns completely square). The ending was a bit disappointing in which Dick Powell goes completely unpunished and Scott, pushed into the role of femme fatale against will and thanks, pays the price. It all has to do with the morals of the time. Another entertaining movie.
