Richard Conte plays one of his best roles as Max, one of the four sons of the powerful banker Gino Monetti [Edward G Robinson, also excellent], who has a bone to pick with his three brothers. Max has been in prison for 7 years and his brothers are firmly in control of the family bank. In flashback, we discover the cause of the feud between the brothers.

Strong screenplay with sharp dialogue. Director Joseph L Mankiewicz keeps a firm grip on the reins, which means that the film continues to fascinate, also because the acting is fine across the board. There's also a fine score from Daniele Amfitheatrof, but the storyline regarding Conte's relationship with Susan Hayward seems to be dragging its hair. This story was also the basis of the western Broken Lance (1954) and The Big Show (1961).

Outstanding film in which a man who spent 7 years in prison visits his three brothers who inherited their father's bank. An entertaining and original story. Especially the dynamic between the father and the four sons is well developed and produces a number of strong scenes (such as the scene at the dinner table and in the bedroom). Thanks to an excellent role by Edward G. Robinson, you still get sympathy for an unsympathetic character.

Excellent family drama in which Robinson clearly favors 1 of his 4 sons while constantly neglecting the other 3 .

They then also drop him like a brick at the first opportunity.

All roles are filled in strongly, with Robinson, Conte and Hayward standing out in particular.

Strongly constructed as a drama with a long flashback and a well-developed story.
