Halfway through noirvember with Backfire. And it's not as colorful as Deadline At Dawn. But even Backfire needs a fair amount of coincidence to weave its story together. It's a fun story, though, in a penny-novel kind of way. For Warner, it was a B-movie, casting actors who, in Jack Warner's opinion, weren't working enough for their contracts. Backfire was already finished but sat on the shelf for a while. When White Heat became a big hit, Backfire was pulled from the shelf in early 1950 and sold as a new film starring O'Brien and Mayo.

The lead role, however, was for Gordon Macrae, a stage actor, primarily in musicals, and also a singer whom Warner wanted to make into a movie star. That never really worked out. After this film, he mainly played supporting roles in musicals. And after the mid-1950s, he returned to the stage.

The ending was quite striking Dane Clark turns out to be quite a psychopath in a way that was only just possible at the time and almost points to something like Psycho.

The story is quite confusing with many twists and improbable turns, which makes you risk losing the overview, but unfortunately it is not interesting enough.
