strong.

Obviously a film that will not do too well. Herrero gives this horror film its own twist, so that the classic horror fun does not immediately come out. That alone makes for a lot of low numbers. A pity, because this is not just a lousy and cheap horror film, but a clever piece of work by someone who does not like to be caught in clichés.

Not a pure horror movie by any means. Drama and some dark fantasy elements ensure that it is not a film that you experience from behind your fingers. Tension or gore are not immediately the main goal of The Maus, although there are quite a few hard scenes here and there. Herrero skilfully uses the genre, but with a slightly different purpose.

The ending is a bit surprising in that regard. It is already a bit of puzzling during the film to pick up the underlying ideas, the very last scene still raises a few question marks. Not bad in itself, but those who just want an evening of popcorn entertainment probably don't really want that.

Visually strong, clever use of sound, two good actors and an original approach. Absolutely worth it.

4.0* and a extended review

What a strange movie! In terms of atmosphere, setting and sound, perfectly fine, but as a whole an incomprehensibly dramatic horror film with the hatred between Bosnians and Serbs as the theme. That hatred is made clear by the consequences of the war in which many mines are in the forests. It is not always clear whether this is happening in reality or in the protagonist's head. Mystery is certainly an issue here and it will be a challenge to fathom everything. It seems to me too much to keep the film interesting enough and then a bizarre ending awaits you that leaves you completely unsatisfactory. Start puzzling. The acting of the protagonist is fine, the rest clearly less so. Tension is very varied in the film. The impression seems to be as the film progresses the tension steadily decreases. My expectations were higher. 5/10

Powerful style exercise, in which everything is very well thought out close to the protagonists and the editing also cleverly responds to this. The most important thing is that the 'air' is guaranteed. This means that there is absolutely no rush to cut to the next shot, even though everything seems to have already been said / the action is complete. It is precisely the choice to let shots run through and to step into the protagonists' 'thinking bubble' for a moment, that's what makes it so strong. Nice to see as an editor, of course, but also something that will always be picked up subconsciously by all kinds of viewers. For some it means that the film feels slow, for others it will feel the tension build. In any case, it is a style choice that can be well substantiated and for me feels right with the heavily loaded content, which is also subtly supplemented with fantasy elements and a certain degree of surrealism. Intriguing genre piece, definitely worth checking out.
