A somewhat less successful sequel to the success from 1993, namely "Free Willy", but still somewhat fun entertainment.

While camping by the sea, Jesse (Jason James Richter) comes into contact with his old friend, sword whale Willy. The killer whale gets trapped in an undersea cave. Jesse springs into action to save Willy and his family from an impending environmental pollution death in the form of an oil slick.

It remains formulaic work, but knows how to play the emotions and the intentions are believable enough to fascinate young and old. Incidentally, Orka Willy (Keiko) had to cancel at the last minute to recover from a skin virus in Mexico, so a digital version was put together.

A sequel that fits perfectly in the line of 90s family film sequels like Home Alone 2 and Beethoven's 2nd: innovation is hard to find, but the original cast is back, making it at least feel like a pretty worthy sequel. As a kid I loved Free Willy and had little problem with Free Willy 2 being more of the same. Like sequels like Home Alone 2 and Beethoven's 2nd, many things are done the same, but at least the location is different. This time we are camping in the woods. In terms of summer atmosphere, the film is in any case good, you get the urge to pack the tent and stay in nature. It's a nice change from that Seaworld-esque setting from the first film. Furthermore, Jayne Atkinson and Michael Madsen return in their sympathetic roles of foster parents and August Schellenberg is back to tell some age-old stories of his people. Even though the focus of a film like this is of course mainly on the kids, these three are probably the nicest characters in the film.

But that's also because the younger figures are rather one-dimensional and boring. Main character Jesse is now the good guy, although he still gets a few scenes in which he can play quite angry. To still have a street girl, they introduce Elvis. A bit of an annoying youngster, but that is largely the intention. In addition, it must be said that the young Capra (no relation to Frank) does play the dramatic scenes very convincingly. Because the drama is definitely present again, just like the first film, Free Willy 2 is almost humorless. But despite that and the somewhat slow build-up of the film, it all rarely gets boring. The completely nonsensical love story between Jesse and Nadine may barely interest you, but it's done much worse. And that might be Free Willy 2 in a nutshell; the average, nowhere excellent, but nowhere really bad.

Benefit of the doubt, 3 stars.

Never seen this sequel, but the film turned out better than expected. Another great story that was captivating from start to finish. Nice to see the original cast return.

Nice to have seen.
