One fine summer's day, ten-year-old India 'Opal' Buloni goes to the supermarket to do some shopping and comes home with a dog. She names him after the supermarket where she found him: Winn-Dixie. Winn-Dixie is not just any dog. He's tall, skinny and he smells a bit, but he also has a heart-warming smile. Opal and her father have just moved in and Opal hasn't made any friends yet in Florida, where they still live in a squalid trailer park. But with the arrival of Winn-Dixie, everything changes. Through him she gets to know all kinds of special people.
