China in the 1930s. The village of a poor family is taken over by the Japanese army. One of the sons, Zhongliang, leaves his wife and goes to work as a medic for the Chinese army. Zhangmin, the other son, goes into hiding to protect his family. The lives of the sons and their family grow further and further apart.
