Nobi plot
In 1945, a Japanese garrison has to survive in the jungle in the Philippines. With a total lack of organization and food, some soldiers slowly go mad or turn to cannibalism. On the contrary, others try to hold on to their principles, however difficult it may be in the constantly deteriorating situation.

A group of Japanese soldiers is stationed in the Philippines, but the war is almost over. Yet, they face a grueling battle against the hunger and exhaustion that await them. We follow a Japanese soldier as he tries to make his way through a devastated landscape, more dead than alive.
Exhaustion has never been so well depicted as in this film. The actors were deliberately given very little food during filming. This shines through. Lead actor Eiji Funakoshi even starved himself completely, until he collapsed on set. Much of the film depicts the character strolling through the landscape without anything spectacular happening. Thanks to the beautiful camerawork, this is almost hypnotic, and time flies by.
Nobi is a beautiful film that phenomenally portrays the despair and exhaustion of war.
