In the village of Jonesport, Maine, farmer Seth Parker and his wife care for their foster son Robbie. Meanwhile, farmhand David Clark, the agricultural school graduate son of "runaway" Rose Clark, secretly befriends Mary Lucy Duffy, the daughter of his employer Wobbling Duffy. Since Rose Clark ran off with a stranger years ago and then returned to Jonesport alone with a baby, both have been ignored by the villagers ever since. Wobbling Duffy forbids his daughter to go out with David. Although David was fired by Wobbling Duffy for dealing with Mary Lucy, he meets her that night at a dance party in a barn. At the same time, Duffy's drunken friend and bandit Rufe Turner shows up in Jonesport. Turner is looking for his son Robbie, whom he left behind when he was a baby.
