Red Dust plot

"She fought for her mate with a tigress' fury…"

Dennis Carson runs a rubber plantation in Vietnam with the help of the regularly drunk McQuarg. One day his comrade Guidon arrives by boat with the prostitute Vantine. Dennis wants nothing to do with Vantine at first and he wants to put her on the next boat to Saigon. Vantine manages to seduce Dennis and they have a short-lived affair. Then the somewhat naive engineer Willis arrives with his sophisticated wife Barbara. Almost immediately Dennis is attracted to this beautiful woman...

A film that initially just meanders along but comes across very strongly in the second part. The intrigue surrounding a charmer and two completely different women is well told and explored in depth. Furthermore, one can count on excellent actors, with the prize undoubtedly going to Jean Harlow.

I have always regarded this film as the ultimate Jean Harlow film. This rewatch has changed that. Backed by a lavish décolletage, Harlow monopolizes the entire film with her priceless, shameless, and sarcastic one-liners: ”I suppose he asked you if he could use your lipstick.” The Hays Code, instituted two years later, made such sexually charged films virtually impossible until the mid-1960s.

Clark Gable would reprise his role decades later in the rather tame 1953 remake, Mogambo, with Ava Gardner in the role of Harlow. But as is often the case with remakes, that film remains far removed from the original.
