Claude Sautet films in his typical style (reminiscent of Lelouch) of those years very skillfully the adventures of a group of exuberant and emotionally driven friends.

It might not quite reach the level of "Les Choses de la Vie" from a few years earlier, but Sautet, as is usually the case with him, can call upon a group of top French artists, and watching them perform in their relaxed, lively, French style is always something special. Yves Montand, in particular, underscores his versatility.

Nice camera work.

A delightful film, in which men wrestle with women, and women wrestle with men. Because that is how things were in France in the seventies. You could certainly leave that to grandmaster Claude Sautet. Only he could guide such a wild bunch of top actors as Ives Montand, Michel Piccoli, Serge Reggiani, and a very young Gerard Depardieu in the right direction. Of these four, only Depardieu is still alive, and you don't want to see him anymore.

The story doesn't delve too deep, although plenty happens. It is nice to see how the four friends support each other when things get a bit tough—with money, with work, with women. For the seventies, although liberated, were also quite a troubled decade. Sautet may not reach the level of 'Les Choses de la Vie' and 'Une histoire simple' here, but there is still much to enjoy. If only to see how everyone still smoked, and not sparingly either.
