Unterm Birnbaum plot

Innkeeper Abel Hradscheck from Oderbruch faces bankruptcy. When a debt collector knocks on the door, Hradscheck pays his debts with money that comes from an inheritance. Shortly after his departure, however, the debtor is found dead in the river Oder, but there is no trace of Abel himself. Until a body is finally discovered under the pear tree in the garden of the Hradschecks... which has been there for 20 years.
