Slightly erotic drama thriller about a married mother who ends up in an extramarital affair. Cinematography: many outdoor scenes on the street in the rain and in the subway, indoor scenes among many dusty books. Colors used: outside many grey/blue tones, inside many soft antique brown tones. Music: varied, but beautiful and well suited to the various scenes. Players: Diane Lane plays the adulterous wife effectively, the sexy Olivier Martinez plays her passionate lover and Richard Gere the solid reliable family man with a dark side.

Plot: Connie is a married woman with an apparently good marriage. On the street in the rain, she accidentally bumps into a handsome stranger and that starts a steamy affair. The handsome stranger is a bookseller, who knows exactly how to 'read' and 'play' her, resulting in fierce love scenes ('hit me!'). Connie realizes that it is actually 'not done', this results in one of the best scenes of the film: 'the tram scene'. She travels home by subway and Diane Lane then shows a lot of different emotions: disbelief, realization 'what have I done...', memory, chuckle, suppressed laughter, yearning, lust, realization 'this is not possible/shouldn't' : a good example of guilty pleasure...... The tram scene is interspersed with flashbacks of the love scene. Despite the fact that you feel that it cannot end well, a surprising plot twist follows, with a twist from romantic drama film to thriller. Then it quickly goes downhill and the film heads for a black dramatic ending ......

Moral of this story: falling in love with someone else can happen to anyone. Boontje comes for his wages, because the cheater is also cheated herself. Deceit and crime almost always come true, no matter how hard you try to hide it...

Good film with 2 strong actors of which I have really seen too little: Richard Gere and Diane Lane. I thought this would be more of a femme fatale movie, but it's not exactly that. Yet Diane Lane is relatively sexy with her French loverboy. During the last three quarters of an hour the film changes tone a bit, which I didn't expect right away. Great film, maybe a bit long here and there and perhaps too short in certain areas.

As is often the case with remakes, this film cannot match the French original, Chabrol's La Femme Infidèle (1969). An additional problem is the prominent role of Richard Gere. With his limited facial expression, he has too little talent to be able to carry a film like this.
