Pacifiction plot
After a successful book tour in France, a writer returns to French Polynesia. However, she has entered a creative crisis and is struggling with writer's block. She takes on a translation job where she meets an ambassador. Things crackle between them, but a political conflict stands in the way of their relationship.

I'm definitely not a fan of Serra's films, have seen several and none have I enjoyed. I also thought this was a terribly boring film that was way too long. Some call it Serra's best, not difficult I think if you look at his other films. Boring as hell....

Magimel plays De Roller, a representative of the French Republic who is in Tahiti to calm things down. Some residents claim to have seen a nuclear submarine and threaten harsh action if it means France resumes nuclear testing in the area. The Roller hangs out on the terrace, in a nightclub, sails around a bit, flies around a bit, chats with everyone about small talk. On the hour someone says something that suggests we're eating our noses and scratching our butts for 140 minutes before a spectacular, suspenseful denouement. It's little to betray when I say that a half-naked female DJ and a dance between an Admiral and a muscular islander certainly falls short of that expectation. A boring, at times pretentious advertising campaign for Polynesia. Good night.

Like a true colonial, a high government commissioner directs life on the French island of Tahiti by doing nothing but holding office in a nightclub, satisfying everyone day and night with soothing words and above all doing nothing like a wandering sleepwalker.
Albert Serra takes the time necessary to also lull the viewer to sleep until you begin to realize that meanwhile the man's legs are being sawn by just about everyone he speaks to and tries to befriend.
What a wonderful film that not everyone agrees on.
