"CAUGHT IN THE BLACK SPELL OF TERROR!"
Young painter Walter Hartright encounters some strange characters on an English estate, where he is hired by the beautiful Laura Fairlie to teach art. The company includes Anne Catherick, a strange young woman, dressed in white, whom he met in the woods. Anne bears a striking resemblance to Laura. Then the wily Count Fosco, who hopes to inherit an inheritance from the nobleman Sir Percival Glyde, who wishes to marry Laura; the hypocritical Mr. Fairlie, who hates anyone who makes the slightest noise, and the eccentric Countess Fosco, who carries a dark secret. Walter is attracted to Marian Halcombe, a distant relative of Laura, whom Count Fosco is also in love with.
