After The Sixth Sense, director M. Night Shyamalan was a celebrated director in Hollywood, whose new film was an experience for audiences. Films such as Unbreakable and Signs became huge commercial successes, but the level of The Sixth Sense was nowhere reached.

The Village also did it with a revenue of 257 million dollars, not bad at the cinemas. However, the film received little critical acclaim from both press and public. Not entirely unjustified, because the story surrounding The Village is quite far-fetched. Unlike The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan hardly manages to create tension here. The story drags on painfully slowly, and it takes over an hour before anything actually happens. This is a shame, because The Village is not a bad film. The sets, costumes, photography and music are all perfectly fine. The acting is good, with Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix and William Hurt notably standing out. However, as a horror film, The Village failed.

A film that has fallen out of favor and I don't think it manages to convince a new audience. It relies quite heavily on the story too, with some use of color to dress it up nicely. That story is not bad, but the atmosphere is never captivating and the acting is never really strong. Bryce Dallas Howard wasn't bad for me. I did see Kirsten Dunst play that part. The film can also count on an impressive cast, even if it remains rather short and understated for most of them. In addition to major roles for Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix, Adrien Brody, William Hurt and Sigourney Weaver, you also have Brendan Gleeson, perennial supporting role Judy Greer, Jesse Eisenberg in one of his first roles and Funny Games and Dreamers actor Michael Pitt.

The film is enjoyable to watch, there is enough going on to keep it interesting, but it lacks the necessary atmosphere to really make it a dark fairytale, it lacks tension to make it a horror and the overkill of the well-known cast shifts focus too much to the viewer.
