The story of Macbeth in the hands of Joel Coen, exceptionally without his brother Ethan. After he announced that he no longer wanted to make films, Joel has already made a nice solo start. After the epic version from 2015 by Justin Kurzel with Michael Fassbender, it is now up to Coen with Denzel Washington in a more dramatic version that is visually very stunning.

With the vocabulary of Shakespeare, but delivered very strongly so that it does not seem like you are watching a play. Also in terms of decor and cinematography we see a nice mix between theater (without feeling like you are in a theater hall) and a cinematic dream. Wonderfully in black and white, we play with light and we get minimalism in all its grandeur. Joel Coen has clearly found the balance between theatrical tradition and a visual translation to the big screen.

Image ratio and black and white underline the theater approach that Coen chooses here, I think it is completely logical and works perfectly. Beautiful with those sleek, minimalist-Gothic decors and the sharp contrasts. Sound design is also somewhat reminiscent of the theater world, it is straightforward. In terms of design, in my opinion there is really nothing to criticize about this film. I sometimes had some difficulty with the dialogues, although using the original text as an atmospheric element works well anyway. It is Denzel Washington himself who is able to give his voice and texts their own life from the tight cadence of Shakespeare's verses, which is all the more noticeable within the rest of the cast. I thought it was very well done. It doesn't really touch me and there is not enough room for the more subtle psychological development, but in my opinion The Tragedy of Macbeth is a film not to be missed for cinephiles.

Not for me. As a film lover, I can see that this is a well-made film with beautiful shots and a strong cast. And as a Coen fan I also want to like it. But unfortunately the film did little or nothing for me. The stage form distracts from the content and the classical dialogues could not hold my attention.

Visually strong, although I would have preferred a widescreen format, I thought this aspect ratio had little added value.
