The Silent Lovers plot
Greta Garbo comes to America from her native Sweden, after famed director Mauritz Stiller discovered her in 1924 at Stockholm's prestigious Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern. As Stiller's fame wanes, Garbo's fame skyrockets, especially after her partnership with heartthrob John Gilbert. Gilbert and Garbo plan to get married, but the evasive Garbo doesn't show up at the wedding. A disconsolate Gilbert manages to insult the head of MGM, Louis B. Mayer, who retaliates by messing up the soundtrack of Gilbert's first spoken film, ruining the actor's career.
