Gershwin's The Man I Love is more or less the common thread in this film. Ida Lupino becomes melancholic when she sings it. For 'the man she loves' the song is a painful reminder of his past. But anyone who knows the song a little will come to the conclusion that the film is actually a free adaptation of the same song.

Some day he'll come along,
The man I love
And he'll be big and strong,
The man I love
And when he comes my way
I'll do my best to make him stay.

It is therefore a pity that there are a number of forced subplots. With fifteen minutes to go in the film, these conflicts only begin to bubble up and are dealt with in such a quick way that the result actually leaves you cold. While the beginning of the film seems to promise so much.

Ultimately, Lupino's love story is bittersweet. The film thankfully follows the tone of the song instead of the easy 'happy ending' but is not dejected because her Prince Charming exists.
Now it's just a matter of waiting...

More drama than noir, the film is reasonable as a drama and Lupino always plays her role well, the story is however a bit boring.
