The Long Voyage Home plot

"The Love of Women in Their Eyes... The Salt of the Sea in Their Blood!"

After a night of partying ashore, the crew of the SS Glencairn returns to her ship and travels to Baltimore. The crew is a motley crew and when they arrive in Baltimore they get a load of dynamite on board. The raging ocean they end up on, together with the dynamite, ensures that the crew can hardly keep their nerves in check. Especially if they suspect that one of them might be a German spy.

John Wayne in a very silent role...but his colleagues, sailors, are all the more vocal with all kinds of talk, nonsense, doubts and drunken fuss and, if necessary, a firm fist.

Unfortunately, it doesn't mean much, and actually the best scenes are towards the end when the guys get to shore (some of them do not seem unfamiliar to me, as if fused with an Irish pub and the foamless king-sized pots of beer - cfr "The Quiet Man "...) and there is also some tenderness between those chunky, sea-loving guys. Nice to see Midred Natwick at work, even in a spicy, very realistic role.

The whole thing is disappointing for a John Ford film.

This film did not fascinate me at all, Wayne also in a supporting role without any text worth mentioning and the rest of the story is just too boring.

Nice camera work, but that in itself is not enough of course.
