The Law Decides plot
Hoping to keep her stepson John's fortune in the family, Mrs. Wharton works day and night to break up his marriage and betroth him to her daughter, Beatrice. As part of the plan, Mrs. Wharton tells Lorenz to seduce John's wife, Florence, and leads John to believe that Florence has begun an affair with her new suitor. John quickly divorces Florence, who, in an attempt to preserve her honor and good name, becomes engaged to Lorenz.
