In the fall of 1944, the German officer Hans von Kroner infiltrates a POW camp and poses as one of the Americans. Hans, who grew up in the United States, has to spy on them and report their escape plans. Through his actions, several escape attempts are discovered and thwarted. Later, during the last major German offensive of the war in the Belgian Ardennes, Hans' skills were again called upon. With a group of English-speaking Germans, Hans must infiltrate the American army units and sow panic and confusion among the soldiers. However, he fears that he and his men will be exposed.
