drama thriller in which it is useful to know a little about the ins and outs of the American political system. That lack made it difficult for me in the beginning to hook up when placing the pawns.
in a crazy way I am not completely convinced by this film, even though everything is actually perfectly fine: great story, strong tension, good acting. political games are always interesting to watch, if well developed. the chemistry between the different actors/characters is very good. The downside was probably the storyline between Stephen and Molly, but that turned out to be decisive for the script.
When in doubt between 7 and 8, so round down.

The Ides of March is about Governor Morris campaigning to become the Democratic nominee for president and, we believe, the Republican nominee is so weak that dragging in the Democratic nomination is almost definitely a ticket to the White House. So a lot is at stake.

This is the setting against which the film takes place. Ryan Gosling once again plays a fantastically understated, haunted role as a person who finds himself in a desperate situation. The supporting roles of Hoffman, Clooney and Giamatti are also great. Especially the scene with Clooney and the phone call is fantastic.

The story is less grotesque than you might think, but the atmosphere is good. If you like the House of Cards series then this movie is also very interesting, not least because it is written by the same screenwriter. Some knowledge of the American political system is an advantage, but if you don't know anything about it, it doesn't mean you can't follow the film. The modest playing time is fine: it is not stretched unnecessarily long. The ending is well chosen. Good movie.

“If you want to be president, you can start a war, you can lie, you can cheat, you can bankrupt the country, but you can't fuck the interns. They'll get you for that.”

Excellent political thriller. The Ides of March intriguingly shows how power corrupts, ultimately dragging everyone into its trap. Ryan Gosling is perfect as the idealistic Stephen, who is increasingly drawn into political intrigue and power games. In addition to Gosling, Giamatti and Seymour Hoffman are also very strong as campaign managers for the two remaining Democratic presidential candidates.

Evan Rachel Wood also has a strong role as an intern on presidential candidate Mike Norris' campaign team, and while the character is sparsely written, Wood gets the most out of it. Clooney is, of course, perfectly cast as a slick presidential candidate. Keeping the world full of lies, deceit and political intrigue interesting isn't easy, but Clooney manages to keep it going for a long time. The characters remain a bit flat, and you can't really call them sympathetic. That must be part of this world, and eventually Stephen will also have to believe it.
