The Florida Project plot

"Welcome to a magical kingdom"

Moonie and her friends' summer consists of one thing: playing mischief. Firing a fire, undercutting cars, yelling at a neighbor who is sunbathing topless and running away screaming with laughter. She lives with her mother in a cheap motel near Disney World. Through her eyes it's a pastel pink castle, with a new adventure around every corner. What her mother has to do every day to pay for another night's stay - Moonie doesn't get half of it.

Sean Baker remains a special filmmaker, especially how he gets the most out of his setting and relatively (unknown) cast. He has wonderful compassion for social outcasts and knows how to give the right nuance. So "warm" and the ending is the most beautiful heartfelt childhood moment in the history of film. Baker continues to amaze me, and rightly so that his first "big" film can count on such praise.

Many directors seem to like it very much to say that they work with 'locals' and 'amateurs', but I fear that this film has shown the usefulness of acting schools. Found both the kids and the mother in question heavily over-acting. I got really tired of Moonie playing some kind of child caricature. Maybe it's just how Americans are, I don't know, but I really couldn't imagine you interacting in that way. Almost every scene has to have something funny, sharp, rowdy or at least something remarkable coming out of one of the mouths, never something 'normal'.

(Now you'll say: That's exactly the point! They're not normal! But I assume you know what I mean. Even people in a lower social class have an average shitty conversation every now and then.)

The first part is therefore also exhausting for me. The film really started for me from the perfume sales, and especially from the mother's 'new job'. The second half is also a lot better for me.

I'm not that familiar with Sean Baker, which is probably true for most, but I expected a slightly different movie based on the setting and soundtrack. The music actually plays a part in the background, while I had hoped it would be drawn more to the foreground. If it would have been a more stylized film I would have less trouble with the exaggerated behavior of the actors, but in a somewhat 'realistic' approach I didn't think the characters did justice to the sad situation in any way.

“While the sinners sin, the children play.”

The Florida Project is a poignant and at the same time beautiful portrait about growing up in poverty. The weather is always nice in Orlando and Disney World is close by, but poverty trumps almost literally on the doorstep of the amusement park. Don't let the nice weather, the bright colors and the happy children dazzle you, life here is hard. In these circumstances, you see Monee (the exquisite Brooklynn Prince) grow up, and you see her playing mischief with boyfriends and creating her own (dream) world. The circumstances are harsh and tragic, but if you look a little further, The Florida Project is also an impressive coming of age story with many recognizable moments.

Unfortunately, the mischief they do goes from bad to worse, and you soon know this is going to end badly. The only question is who the police will come first, the mother or daughter. As a viewer you get little sympathy for the mother (Bria Vinaite), but you do feel the bond between mother/daughter. Dafoe is also fantastic as a jack of all trades with his heart in the right place. The ending scene feels like a dream sequence, but in the city of Disney World, anything is possible. Everything, The Florida Project poignantly shows, and the American Dream is very close here and yet so far away at the same time.
