Melodramatic mess with a (yes, really) overacting Whitaker as a cricket player with a weird accent. Also with the craziest dialogues, but that applies to everyone here. Not the only thing that can't be taken seriously. His friendship with Fergus is already something that is not convincing and the next relationship that presents itself, well, Jimmy, you should have seen that coming. Jordan also makes fun of his movie with those flashbacks and the IRA plot that rears its head, is immediately ruined when Jude takes office. Firewood from start to finish.

When the sounds of Percy Sledge's “When a man…” (a song I have very fond memories of) came out of the speaker, I knew immediately that I had seen the film before.

Although that must have been quite a long time ago, the film managed to captivate me again. In the first place thanks to the beautiful screenplay, which contains everything you could wish for: suspense, romance and drama. Second for the memorable roles of Stephen Rhea, Jim Broadbent (the bartender) and most importantly of an outstanding Jaye Davidson. It is not often that a review pleasantly surprises me. That was the case here.

Excellent movie. Very humanistic film especially, in which the main character, out of genuine good-naturedness and then love for the girlfriend of a killed British soldier he has taken hostage together with his IRA friends. The ambiguous feelings dominate and the relationship between a guilt-ridden Fergus/Jimmy and the lonely but affection-hungry Dil was very interesting to follow. Towards the end the IRA returns and the film still has some tension. Rarely seen such a film where romance, drama and thriller hang together so well. I had already seen the film so knew the twist, but even with revision this film remains a real winner. Bad poster: It's sold as a thriller when the movie is essentially a drama.
