"Imagine a day like any other. The children are fighting, the refrigerator is humming. Highways are jammed, playgrounds are filled. Everything is perfectly normal... For the very last time."

After the US is rocked by a series of nuclear explosions, the tight-knit community in the village of Hamlin tries to get back on track. Carol's husband was killed in the nuclear disaster and she must now try to maintain her family life with her three children, knowing that they too have not escaped the devastating effect of the radioactive radiation.
