I've lost count of how many times I've seen this movie. A perfect mix of humor and tear-jerking drama. Film does full justice to Larry McMurtry's beautiful book of the same name. An absolute topper.

For her role as Aurora, Shirley MacLaine is said to have taken inspiration from Martha Beall Mitchell, the wife of the American Attorney General at the time of Watergate, who, to the annoyance of those around her, had an opinion to say about everything. Aurora is a fagot with whims and whims who is afraid of growing old alone. In the opening scene she loses her temper at the alleged cot death of her daughter. Thirty years later she's screaming the whole hospital together for an injection for that same daughter. It is an expression of powerlessness.

The characters are lifelike, with a mixture of good and bad qualities, with doubts and contradictions. In a succession of funny, moving and exciting scenes, they arouse sympathy and annoyance. The difference in mentality between the different American regions is well illustrated: the southern temperament, the Nordic closed-mindedness, the superficial modernity of LA and New York.

The big turnaround, in the form of a malignant tumor, leads to one of the most poignant death scenes ever. Objects in the sickroom, such as the tie Emma gave to Flap as a gift and Aurora's Renoir, evoke banal memories, which now suddenly take on a deeper meaning. There is no corny background music, no exaggerated close-ups. The viewer is reminded of his own mortality. The survivors rely on each other with all their weaknesses, knowing that their fate is not in their own hands.
