Disappointing.

Between 2000-2010 you actually have a separate cross-section of films. I honestly haven't checked it so I may be grossly mistaken, but this is really one of those "my first digital project" movie. Directors who see in DV an opportunity to experiment a bit, even start over.

In any case, Linklater doesn't feel like making something beautiful out of it. He swings the camera every now and then, crawls in crazy places (what with DV that was suddenly easier) but it all looks ugly and unfinished. I'm glad that that period is now over.

Anyway, I do like movies that take place in one location, but I don't like Linklater's talk movies. The first 45 minutes are especially tough. The dialogues are forced and leading, Hawke and Leonard are not good in their roles and in terms of theme I often have the idea that Linklater should have started a blog to write a number of things off. It's all kind of "I've been thinking about life and look, here's my vision". That can work in a movie, provided that the A: is interesting and B: involves more than two talking men throwing ideas at each other's head way too directly.

It gets a little better when Thurman comes on the scene (that I actually get to type that sentence again), the film finally starts to go somewhere, but her piece is also stretched too long. In the end Linklater doesn't have much to say with this film, it is mainly opening doors, he needs 90 minutes for that and he doesn't add anything extra to it.

1.5*

Interesting film that depends purely on dialogue and the tension between the characters. It's an art to keep a film interesting with only 2/3 actors in one location and it works.
Hawke is playing crazy. Separate camera angles. After the first fifteen minutes you start to wonder if you will stay in the film, but the tension is built just right. The scenes are quite awkward and even confusing at times, just as intended.
It's not high-flying, but certainly a good job with these resources.

“People change. They end up having nothing to say to each other even if they were best friends years before.”

Excellent movie from Linklater. You can actually see all the elements here with which he eventually became really familiar with the Before trilogy. A small-scale and human story, the focus on the actors and dialogues and an authentic and realistic atmosphere.

Hawke is really great in this movie and as soon as Thurman comes out, the movie takes on a whole new dynamic. But Robert Sean Leonard should also get the credit because he may be a little less exuberant and colorful than the other actors, but he does manage to make Jon a character who initially feels morally superior to Vin, but [spoiler ]finally gets the hypocritical lid on his nose. Three Actors in a Hotel Room, that this is so interesting and exciting is shown by the class of Linklater and the actors.
