Tangerine shows the seedier sides of LA. It's a summer day and coincidentally also Christmas Eve. You don't notice any cozy sweetness, snow everywhere or all those other tired Christmas clichés. No, director Sean Baker presents the viewer with a couple of transgender prostitutes and a tragic adulterous taxi driver with Armenian roots, all in a more or less impoverished suburb of Los Angeles. A recently released prostitute discovers that her pimp and boyfriend cheated on her during her captivity. She 'kidnaps' the one who cheated on him and then a funny farce ensues. The Armenian taxi driver is also cleverly involved in the story and everything explodes in a great climax.

The whole time I was watching with a smile on my face the bizarre scenes of the characters fighting each other. It has a bit of schadenfreude about it, but I think Sean Baker also just wants to show the unpolished sides of this scene. I always have some reservations beforehand with these kinds of sensitive theme films (isn't it all too obvious and all?), but here the theme of transgender prostitutes is tackled in a fun and good way.

Found it better than expected. Most characters were indeed not very sympathetic and caused irritation to take over in some scenes. But sometimes the monkey watching was actually quite entertaining, like during the Donut Time scene in which the entire hopeless group comes together to degenerate into a real chicken coop.

Visually not always successful and sometimes even quite cheap, but on the other hand there is a pretty nice soundtrack. Occasionally a bit random and too fleeting to really enhance the atmosphere, but a few impressive moments should not go unmentioned. Especially the ambient track that enters towards the end suddenly creates a completely different atmosphere and ensures that certain moments still make an impression.

All in all a pretty original film that occasionally makes mistakes, but was easy to watch and sometimes left positive impressions. 3*

Sin-Dee Rella [Kitana Kiki Rodriguez] has just finished a short prison sentence and is ready to pick up her work as a prostitute in Hollywood. When her best friend Alexandra [Mya Taylor] lets slip that Sin-Dee's boyfriend (and pimp) Chester [James Ransone] is having an affair with a blonde whose name started with a D, Sin-Dee is determined to set things right. The Armenian taxi driver [Karren Karagulian] is a taxi driver who comes to play a major role in the story. Groundbreaking because it is filmed entirely on location with iPhones and that it focuses on two transgender women. The completely inexperienced Rodriguez and Taylor are phenomenal, but this feels completely authentic anyway. More importantly, it is consistently entertaining and at times exceptionally funny. The climax in Donut Time is unforgettable, but perhaps the simple but extremely moving final scene will stick with you even more. A big hit at Sundance.
