Three German refugees cross Germany, Austria and Switzerland, constantly being hunted by the Nazis and finding nowhere safe. Ruth Holland is a Jewish chemist and Ludwig Kern also has a Jewish mother. The refugees lose each other during the journey through occupied Europe, but they remain hopeful that they will see each other again.
