Skin plot

"Hatred Was His Way Out"

1979. Seventeen-year-old Frankie (Robert de Hoog) resists his father's trauma. The Jewish Simon (John Buijsman) survived Auschwitz and constantly confronts his son with it, but he does not talk about it further, leaving his family in the dark. Frankie therefore strongly opposes his father and transforms himself from an ordinary boy from Rotterdam into a skinhead.

Good movie, came across very gloomy after the credits.

The pressure from the different sides exerted on the protagonist came across well and visible.

strong and realistic acting, beautiful shots of the locations. thick 4.0

Good atmosphere, good actors, but what a poor script, I must say. As predictable as it was unbelievable, the father-son relationship got worse with each scene, while the dear son became a bit more radical each time. Linear, step by step and nowhere tangible.

You sometimes hear that Dutch films are bad. I don't agree, but when you see things like this, this kind of unimaginative, amateurish junk, made by the rules but with no soul, I get where the idea comes from. In other countries, of course, they also make these kinds of films. We just never get to see them, because they don't cross the border. Good thing, too.

With friendly greetings,

Drulko

Frankie [Robert de Hoog] does not know what to do with the illness of his mother [Sylvia Poorta] and the war trauma of his father [John Buijsman], a Holocaust survivor. He finds some self-esteem and respect when he joins a group of skinheads, but that gets him into trouble with the police and conflict with his family. Despite good playing by De Hoog, this is a superficial, simplistic melodrama that seems to have little interest in the complexity of the emotions that influence the actions of father and son.
