Shadow Magic plot

Beijing, 1902. Liu Jinglun, a young portrait photographer, befriends Wallace, a newly arrived Englishman, who carries a projector, camera and short films from the Lumières to show in the shadows. Liu's work with Wallace brings him into conflict with tradition and his father's authority. Liu is also madly in love with Ling, daughter of a great opera singer. Liu sees in films his opportunity to make a career and to be worthy of Ling.
