São Bernardo plot
On the farm of São Bernardo, the violent Paulo Honório is arrested for stabbing João Fagundes. Paulo then has to serve his sentence for three and a half years in prison, where he learns to read and write. When he is free again, he manages to get rich quickly by lending money at high interest rates. He takes over the São Bernardo farm and has the owner of the nearby estate murdered.
